Ally Financial in JA City

Written by allysonfletch on . Posted in Community, Featured Partner, JA City

Thanks to our partnership with Ally Financial, we are bringing the JA experience to more students in our community!

Ally sponsored students to attend JA City where they were adults-for-the-day and had the opportunity to see what it takes to interview, run a business and work with others in the JA City community.  Thanks Ally for all your support of JA and Utah’s students!

“I like JA BizTown. I wanted to be the meter reader, but they made me be the CFO!” – Casy, Student

“I liked delivering bills because I liked going into all the businesses; that was the best part of JA. I learned to be patient with everything and now I feel prepared to write checks.” – Braeleigh, Student

“We had a lot of kids step in and help each other. JA City has done a great job with constant improvements.” – Jonessa Goates, Ally Volunteer

I was just sitting at Maverick and two students came by. One student was headed to break and the other was headed back to work. The student heading to break patted the other one on the back and said, “You need to get back to work, you’ve got a lot of bills to pay!” I had to laugh. – Becky Anderson, Teacher

Delta Job Shadow

Delta Air Lines hosted Students from Granger High School or JA Job Shadow

JA Job Shadow is a hands-on program where organizations invite high school students to their place of business to the spend the day learning about not only the organization as a whole, but the variety of job and career opportunities available within that organization. They also share with the students the skills and education required to obtain those careers.  This unique opportunity opens students eyes to the many possibilities available and exposes them to careers that they may not have realized were possible. JA Job Shadow is truly an interactive and fun opportunity for students to start thinking about their futures.

At this Job Shadow, Granger High students were given the unique opportunity to tour one of Delta’s NBA Charter planes. Delta has seven planes that are in the NBA Charter fleet that are used solely for NBA teams flying around the country for games. These planes are modified to provide the extra leg room, fancy meals and huge (by airplane standards) restrooms for the basketball players. Delta let the students know that very few people are allowed on the airplanes, but Granger students had luck on their side!

Students also had a chance to visit the main Delta hanger and see a plane up on jacks and check out the deicing and snow removal equipment and were able to chat with the the paramedics, EMTs and firemen/women on site. They also had the chance to view the equipment that tower operators use and check out a 360-degree view of the runways. One of the favorite stops on the tour, besides the NBA bathroom, was the cockpit of the 757.

Thank you to Delta for making this event possible and giving Granger High students such a unique and unforgettable experience!

and they were thrilled to welcome students to their Salt Lake Terminal for JA Job shadow!

This week we held a special ribbon cutting at JA City to welcome our newest storefront – Delta Airlines.  Students from Sam Morgan Elementary were on hand to help welcome (and break in) this awesome new edition to our City . . . where students can even print out authentic looking tickets!

Delta also welcomed students from Bountiful and Viewmont High Schools to “the real” Delta Terminal at the Salt Lake International Airport for a         JA Job Shadow event where students were given tours and the opportunity to learn about the many and varied career opportunities available at Delta, along with what it takes to get them.

We couldn’t be more excited for our new partnership with Delta and all they have to offer our students!

EY Connect Day

Written by allysonfletch on . Posted in Community, JA City, Middle School Programs

On September 30, we spent the day with a group of enthused, dedicated volunteers from Ernst & Young LLP (EY) as part of EY Connect Day, their annual day of service. While their commitment to creating social impact in their communities is strongly felt year-round, on EY Connect Day, EY closes its offices so its professionals can volunteer in their local communities. More than 23,000 EY professionals shut down their laptops to volunteer throughout their communities.

This year’s EY Connect Day project at JA focused on presenting JA programs in classrooms throughout the Salt Lake Valley and supporting 8th grade students participating in Finance Park at JA City. We were thrilled to have the EY volunteers with us and their impact is deeply felt!

Keep up with EY volunteers by following #EYConnectDay on Twitter and Instagram.
